Vinaya Puppala, MD conducted research for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center, while he was still studying in high school.
Dr Puppala received a student grant from the National Institute of Health to conduct a research. It was a nerve related research, which he successfully completed under the mentorship of Chief of Plastic Surgery Dr Susan MacKinnon.
As a part of this research, he even performed his life’s first microscopic neurosurgery. He was only 19 years of age at that time. This event sparked his interest in pain medicine.
Dr Puppala is the recipient of several awards and recognition. These include the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists award. He won this award for best original research on the successful treatment of HIV-related polyneuropathy using spinal cord stimulation.
